The Espresso Book Machine®

The Espresso Book Machine (EBM) is a cutting-edge book production solution which pairs speed with exceptional image quality to produce books on demand. At the push of a button, it can print, bind, and trim a paperback book in mere minutes, so you can have access to what you want, when you want it, where you want it. The EBM begins with digital files available from publishers and other content aggregators. Using a laserjet printer for the black and white interior and an inkjet printer for the full color cover, the EBM produces the book components, binds them together with hot glue and trims off any excess paper. The resulting book is a library-quality perfect-bound paperback hot off the press and ready to read immediately.
Why not print a rare book and personalize it with your own message...just ask us how!
The EBM currently has access to a database of over seven million titles, with more being added every day. This database consists of current, in-print titles available from publishers as well as scans of older, rare books in the Public Domain. If a title is in the Public Domain, it is out of copyright and often no longer in circulation. The EBM allows you to print paperback versions of rare works that are otherwise not available in book form. Some authors of note whose in-print books are available through the EBM:
- Poet Laureates Joseph Brodsky, Donald Hall, Philip Levine
- Pulitzer Prize-winning authors Gary Wills, David Remnick, Richard Rhodes
- Nobel Prize winning novelists Mario Vargas Llosa, Seamus Heaney, Derek Walcott, Wole Soyinka, William Golding, Elias Canetti, Czeslaw Milosz, Isaac Bashevis Singer
Interesting older titles:
Alice’s Adventures Under Ground — the original manuscript on which the classic story was based, handwritten by Lewis Caroll as a Christmas gift for the real Alice. The Bay Psalm Book — the first book (that is still in existence) printed in British North America in 1640. Proust in the original French!
Most of the EBM’s Public Domain content comes from the Google Books database. In addition, we can also print titles from the Internet Archive, Gallica, and Project Gutenberg. If you are interested in a particular title from any of these databases, email us to learn about price & availability.
Click here to search the database of Espresso Book Machine titles. You will soon be able order books directly through the EBM website. In the meantime if you have any questions or would like to place an order, you can reach us via email, phone, or in person during our regular business hours.
Prices for books will vary depending on the book length and the content source, but most EBM books fall within the range of average paperback prices ($10 – $30). The list price for each book will be listed next to the title in the search results. We aim to fulfill all orders within 24 hours of receiving them, and will contact you when your order is ready to be picked up.
In addition to printing existing books through the EBM, you can also print your own work. Whether you’re an author self-publishing your novel, a genealogist printing your family history in time for the next family reunion, or a teacher compiling your students’ short stories into a unique volume for friends and family, you can use the EBM to bring your project to life. We offer a range of services to meet the individual needs of each author. Learn more about our Self-Publishing Program.
